Corporate Media's Willing Distortions Pave Way
for War Posted August 17, 2002 - On August 8, a
USA Today article that described
how Saddam Hussein is "complicating U.S. plans to topple his regime" repeated a
common myth about the history of U.S.-Iraq relations. Reporter John Diamond wrote that
"Iraq expelled U.N. weapons inspectors four years ago and accused them of
being
spies." This statement simply isn't true, by a longshot - as noted in an
action
alert by Fairness
and Accuracy in Reporting. The Bush administration has launched a
PR campaign to 'sell' the U.S. abroad, and can be expected to soon launch another to
'sell' the idea of attacks on
Iraq to the American public. It is likely that the following facts will be omitted: seattle.indymedia.org
ACLU of Texas Denounces State Attorney General for Failing
to Investigate "Travesty of Justice" August
17, 2002 SAN ANTONIO-In testimony today before state lawmakers, the American Civil
Liberties Union blasted Texas Attorney General John Cornyn for failing to investigate a
series of phony drug busts that led to the arrest of nearly 10 percent of the black
residents of a small town in Texas. "Attorney General John Cornyn is passing the buck
to the United States Justice Department while innocent people continue to languish in
prison, and corrupt police officers and prosecutors continue to pervert justice,"
said Harrell, who testified before the House Judicial Affairs Committee, which oversees
the Texas Attorney General's Office. After learning of the mass arrests of black residents
in Tulia, the ACLU of Texas, along with the NAACP, filed a civil rights complaint in
October 2000 with the U.S. Department of Justice, charging racial discrimination and
prosecutorial misconduct. An investigation was initiated that now appears to have come to
a standstill under the Bush Administration, Harrell said. Last month a Justice Department
official reportedly told the president of the American Bar Association that the
investigation was closed. aclu.org

Rights Trampled in U.S. August 16, 2002 by Paul Knox Report Says Washington Showed 'Stunning Disregard for
Democratic Principles' Since Sept. 11 U.S. authorities deliberately trampled
constitutional rights after Sept. 11 in a crackdown that saw immigrants jailed without
cause, tried in secret and, in some cases, physically abused, a leading human-rights group
has charged. In a report to be released today, Human
Rights Watch accuses President George W. Bush's government of displaying "a
stunning disregard for the democratic principles of public transparency and
accountability" in its response to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
It says authorities rounded up at least 1,200 people because of their religion or ethnic
background, jailed them on immigration charges to deny them rights normally enjoyed by
accused persons, and held many in harsh isolation conditions. commondreams.org
Camps for Citizens: Ashcroft's Hellish
Vision August 15, 2002 By JONATHAN TURLEY Attorney general shows himself as a menace
to liberty - Jonathan Turley is a professor of constitutional
law at George Washington University. Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft's announced desire
for camps for U.S. citizens he deems to be "enemy combatants" has moved him from
merely being a political embarrassment to being a constitutional menace. Ashcroft's plan,
disclosed last week but little publicized, would allow him to order the indefinite
incarceration of U.S. citizens and summarily strip them of their constitutional rights and
access to the courts by declaring them enemy combatants. The proposed camp plan should
trigger immediate congressional hearings and reconsideration of Ashcroft's fitness for
this important office. Whereas Al Qaeda is a threat to the lives of our citizens, Ashcroft
has become a clear and present threat to our liberties. latimes.com
Large new multi-level boxcars have been spotted in the
United states by American citizens Posted August 15, 2002
- Near the date of Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at approximately 11:30 AM, a man and his
wife saw the unusual rail cars, while driving north across a railway overpass, in the
southside of Chicago, IL. Mr. HK., stated; "And there they were, all brand new and
lined up in a row, at least two dozen. They were white in color and they were
"definitely" multi-tiered, and stood out from the other cars, also, these rail
cars had, what looked like, screened windows of some type". Another witness in New
Jersey stated, "Some time ago I saw some reports about German ships
entering the NJ area and believe it or not, me and a fella here at work actually saw some
of these railcars about a month or so ago. They had 'em parked high up on the tressel so
you couldn't get too close to them. When I went back to get photos, unfortunately they
were gone". thepeoplesvoice.org
Bush 'using language of Hitler' (Filed: 15/08/2002) By David Rennie in Washington Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, accused President George W
Bush yesterday of talking like Hitler. "Arrogance has drawn the bullying West into
disgrace," Ayatollah Khamenei said. "The president of the country which claims
to enjoy freedom and human rights talks to the people of the world using the language of
Hitler." Many Iranians fear that they will be next on the US hit
list after Iraq, as Iran was
named by Mr Bush as a fellow-member of the "axis of evil", and a leading
sponsor of terrorism. There is also concern over the US-backed regime in Afghanistan,
which shares a
600-mile long border with Iran. Mr Khatami used a visit to Kabul this week to give a
warning that the war on terror could backfire on America, accusing the Bush administration
of having "misused" the September 11 attacks "to create an atmosphere of
violence and fear in the world". Mr Khatami has repeatedly condemned the September 11
attacks as "horrific", and his close allies continue to call for the opening of
talks with Washington. telegraph.co.uk
The 401(k) scam: How American workers have been robbed of
their retirement benefits 15 August 2002 By Elisa Brehm A
retirement crisis of staggering proportions faces millions of American working people. The
plunge in the stock market has profound implications in a country where most pensions and
savings are not based on fixed benefits paid by employers, but instead are dependent on
voluntary contributions made by workers to be invested on Wall Street. The 401(k), as the
plan is known, is literally a do-it-yourself retirement plan completely dependent on the
vagaries of the market. With over $7.7 trillion wiped out in two-and-a-half years by the
44 percent fall of Standard & Poor 500, many face a shrinking pension or none at all.
Unlike a high-powered executive, the average worker has no broker who is constantly
following investments, giving tips or advising him or her on the wisest allocations. The
401(k) plan places the responsibility and burden entirely on the worker.

Bush defies belief August
15, 2002 Charlotte Denny President preaches to converted while Fed grapples with the real
problems. The world's largest Baptist university was both an appropriate and unfortunate
location for the Bush administration to pick for this week's summit on the US economy. To
his detractors, the choice of Baylor University in Waco, Texas - half an hour's drive from
President Bush's Crawford ranch - reinforces the image of a president too lazy to stray
far from his holiday home even for a serious issue such as the economic situation. But the
relentlessly upbeat message from the summit suited Baylor's evangelical surroundings.
Invitations to Tuesday's gathering were limited to true believers who spent the day
energetically praising the administration's handling of the economy. guardian.co.uk

Bush says he won't release a more than five (b) billion-dollar emergency spending package

cut waiting lists at V-A hospitals. The American Legion's national commander says more
than 300-thousand veterans are on waiting lists for an initial medical exam needed to

Bushs fake forum Aug. 14 By William Saletan Where were the regular folks at the
presidents economic summit? This afternoon at
the Presidents Economic Forum in Waco, Texas, President Bush and Vice President
Cheney sat side by side on the stage of a packed auditorium for more than an hour.
Thats the first time theyve been that close together for that long in public
since Sept. 11. Evidently theyre no longer afraid of terrorists. What theyre
afraid of is Americans. THE WHITE HOUSE advertised the event as an exchange between
Bush and the public. The Cabinet secretaries who led the forums eight discussion
sessions let the participants do most of the talking, and in his comments at the plenary
session, Bush said he was there to listen to ordinary Americans.
Two of the participants who spoke onstage at the plenary session declared that they were
real people and regular folks. Both were heads of
companies. Indeed, nearly everybody in the two panel discussions aired on C-SPAN
today was a CEO. msnbc.com

Bush's sunny assessment at a half-day economic forum he staged at Baylor University was
overshadowed by a warning from the Federal Reserve that the economy could slip back into
recession, and by Wall Street's subsequent stock slide. fortwayne.com
The Fundamentals Are Not Sound August 14, 2002
By John J. Sweeney President Bush has convened a "summit" to reassure the
country that the fundamentals of our economy are sound. But will it focus on the
fundamentals that working families live with every day? Since the start of 2000, 2.7
million more workers are unemployed and millions more have been forced to accept part-time
employment. When people lose their jobs, it takes longer to find new ones. There are 11.5
million children in poverty. Health care costs are soaring, imperiling coverage for
workers. Rents are rising faster than incomes, and more working families can't afford
adequate housing. Tuitions are going up faster than scholarships or grants. For millions
of older workers, retirement now seems more a threat than a promise. washingtonpost.com

WASHINGTON POST --
President Bush's campaign to allow Americans to invest a portion of their Social Security
taxes in the stock market is losing critical support among Republican candidates for
Congress. Amid sharp attacks by the Democratic Party, several GOP incumbents and
challengers are coming out against Bush's plan to partially privatize the taxpayer-funded
retirement program. Fueling the shift is the stock market's recent plunge, which reminds
voters of the risks of investing in stocks over other financial instruments that guarantee
safe but modest returns. theolympian.com

War: who is it good for? August 11, 2002 Faisal Islam Faisal Islam Bush is gambling that victory over Saddam will lift the US economy
out of double-dip recession - but he risks sparking another oil crisis. Bush will soon
make a decision on whether to declare war on Iraq and attempt to topple Saddam Hussein.
The markets are left asking whether the stuttering US economy is playing any part in the
decision. Although launching 'Gulf War II' has been high up the White House agenda,
worries over corporate accounting and volatile stock markets have focused attention on the
domestic economy. Indeed, with a double dip recession on the cards and accounting concerns

... MARTIAL LAW WILL BEGIN AS SOON AS WAR STARTS IN THE MIDDLE
EAST posted
August 10, 2002 Byron T. Weeks,
MD, Col. AFUS, MC, Retired
Reserve I believe the trigger that will bring on martial law will be the outbreak of war
in Israel, and when Russia comes to the aid of the Islamic states. Our government knows
that the war will spread to North America. In fact they have helped to plan and bring on
the war. The events predicted below will be a post-invasion probable worst case scenario.
How Will They Probably Kill Us? RUSSIA AND CHINA ARE ALREADY SET TO NUKE THE COASTAL
CITIES WITH NEUTRON BOMBS AND TO USE THE TESLA EM AND HAARP TYPE GENERATORS TO CAUSE
EARTHQUAKES AND VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS. After this, the mainland of North America will be
invaded by Chinese, North Korean, Mexican and Nicaraguan troops. The following actions will
very likely be taken by our government over the first few months when war begins They
will come for you, and the US Marines are training themselves and foreign troops to do
just that.. Perhaps it will be city by city. They will come to your house to round you up
and take you to the slave camps, and they won't hesitate to kill you if you resist.
Most areas in the Northwest and Southeast coasts will be cleansed of population and
rewilded. "Useless eaters" who survive will be killed and their bodies burned or
buried in mass graves. The able bodied will be rounded up and taken to slave camps
designated as "re-education centers." Some of the intended slave population will
likely be able to escape to mountainous areas and will hide in the narrow canyons and
caves. It would be advisable to have a hiding hole already prepositioned with food,
survival gear, and weapons when the troubles begin, unless you are planning to accept the

G.O.P. Leader Opposes Attack Aug.10 By ERIC SCHMITT
The House majority leader, Representative Dick Armey, warned today that an unprovoked
attack against Iraq would violate international law and undermine world support for
President Bush's goal of ousting Saddam Hussein. The remarks by Mr. Armey, a Texas
Republican are the most prominent sign of Congressional unease that the administration is
moving rapidly toward a war against Iraq and were especially striking coming from a
leading conservative and a staunch Bush ally. Mr. Armey, speaking to reporters in Des
Moines, said, "I don't believe that America will justifiably make an unprovoked
attack on another nation," he said. "It would not be consistent with what we
have been as a nation or what we should be as a nation." nytimes.com

ACLU Dismayed At Implementation of Flawed Medical Privacy
Regulations August 10, 2002 WASHINGTON - Saying the
Bush Administration's final federal medical privacy regulation fails to fulfill its
promise of safeguarding arguably the most sensitive personal information, the American
Civil Liberties Union expressed dismay at the final regulation and called for a
legislative fix. "This regulation takes one step forward and two steps back,"
said Katie Corrigan, an ACLU Legislative Counsel. "By eliminating consent
requirements for certain health care functions, the Bush Administration is taking power
away from the patient and putting it in the hands of federal bureaucrats." The ACLU
is especially concerned with a provision in the regulation that allows law enforcement
unchecked access to individual medical records, without a warrant or even notice to the
individual whose medical records are at issue. aclu.org

WASHINGTON /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following statement was released today by the office of
House Democratic Leader Richard A. Gephardt: "If President Bush hopes to achieve
constructive results from his 'economic forum' next week, he should reconsider his plan to
hear from only those individuals who support the current economic agenda which is doing
little to create long-term growth and economic opportunity. I am disappointed that the
Bush Administration has decided not to hold an honest discussion of our economic
challenges and is instead staging a 'made-for-TV' program where the price of admission is
a campaign contribution. "I have been urging President Bush for months to hold an
economic summit with experts on the economy and bipartisan represenation of the country's
leadership so that we could devise a plan to get the nation out of deficits and back into
surpluses. He has repeatedly rejected my offer and answered my call for a summit with
political responses. "One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that
President Bush's campaign donors will not exactly provide the Bush Administration with a
broad cross section of views on how to revive the economy. I urge the administration once
again, to expand their economic forum guest list and include more people that represent
the views of all Americans, not just those who give alot of money to Republican
campaigns." usnewswire.com
ECONOMIC COLLAPSE
REDUCE YOUR DEBT: Reducing ones debt to as close to zero as possible is essential. That
may involve selling off some of your real estate investment, moving to a smaller home,
refinancing your home mortgage to a 15-year loan, and eliminating your credit cards. Stop
paying interest.
- Do not be dependent on the government for your well-being.
Try an be as independents and self reliant as possible for your income.
- Take control of your own finances. Read many alternate
sources of information. Do your homework. Be careful to understand what is going on. Avoid
states of denial. Become as independent as possible.
- Make yourself save as much as you can. Most people live
above their means. Learn to live below your means. If you save a minimum of 10% per month,
you can grow your wealth very safely. Some can save 20%-25%.
- Diversify your investments, include investing in Swiss money
instruments,gold, different currencies.
- Avoid weak financial institutions. Get out of harm's way.
Many banks, brokerage house, S& Ls and insurance companies are tottering on the brink
of disaster or close to it in the event of a market downturn. And in spite of the
perception to the contrary, there is no substantive insurance safety net under these
institutions.
- Avoid popular investment markets. There are few goof
opportunities for conservative investors. Stocks are overvalued. If you own stocks have
stops in place. Corporate bonds are vulnerable and will drop as U.S. interest rates rise.
Be very selective in investment real estate. Commodities are out of favor and at bargain
prices. All things are cyclical and go from being under valued to over valued.
- Find investment safe havens. The three best and most
conservative investments to put your money into over the next few years are gold and
silver, foreign government bond funds, and U.S Treasury bill money market funds. Don't
announce to the world what you are doing; keep a low profile.
- Legally bulletproof your business and personal matters.
America is the most litigious country in the world, with 700,000 lawyers and 187 million
new civil lawsuits per year. Every doctor, professional business person or business owner
has a nightmare about being sued into ruin.
- Change your mindset about the news, about investments and
about your financial security. To survive the coming hard times, you must change the way
you do things, the way you think, and the way you invest. You must read between the lines
in today's news reports ... find alternative investments and financial institutions ...and
plan for the future.
- Purchase a one-year food supply and have a large water
source. Own tangible assets or commodities that can be bartered or traded.
- Buy real estate in a small town or rural community that can
serve as a retreat or place of refuge. Home Page
BE VERY AFRAID and make your fears known!
by Dorothy Anne Seese The USA has no palpable excuse to invade Iraq. A futile war effort
against Iraq would not only be a political and economic disaster for the United States, it
may well be the last war the US ever fights. If, for whatever reason, Iran, China and the
League of Arab Nations decide to jump in on Saddam's side of the war, then the US will no
longer be a superpower (or the illusion of one), it will be a total has-been on the
world's political scene. It seems that the cooler heads in the US and its ally Britain are
endlessly issuing warnings about invading Iraq and deposing Saddam Hussein. There is too
much at stake in the world about us in these perilous times to send our military into a
Muslim nation to settle an old, personal vendetta between the Bush family and Saddam. Iraq
will not be standing alone if America invades, and the American people will be the ones
who pay the highest price for such a "war". This is the time for all Americans
to be afraid, very afraid, that our leadership is headed down the trail to Armageddon.

Unlimited Presidential Powers
August 9, 2002 The Justice Department all but told a federal judge this week to
take his legitimate concerns about civil liberties and stuff them in the garbage pail. The
Bush administration seems to believe, on no good legal authority, that if it calls
citizens combatants in the war on terrorism, it can imprison them indefinitely and deprive
them of lawyers. It took this misguided position to a ludicrous extreme on Tuesday,
insisting that the federal courts could not review its determinations. This defiance of
the courts repudiates two centuries of constitutional law and undermines the very freedoms
that President Bush says he is defending in the struggle against terrorism. The courts
must firmly reject the White House's assertion of unchecked powers. nytimes.com
